Bleak

What do you think is the future of AI?

I envision three separate futures for the world of AI. Two are bleak, one is fanciful at best.

Information Apocalypse

In this scenario, AI is constantly funded and we get more and more data centers. Nobody checks for redundant data, nobody cleans up the system, it just runs and runs, until there’s no room left to house the data storage. What happens then? I don’t know. But I do know it isn’t good.

Media Apocalypse

Generative AI is likely the number one way that normal people are using AI “products”. The media blitz version of AI is that we who are addicted to constant stimulation and rage bait, finally trick ourselves into a true forever war, fueled by generated narratives. Alternatively, people mentally rot as they sit in front of their feeds until there’s system eventually collapses.

The AI Boom Dies, and People Go Back to the Real World

This is a fanciful notion, certainly. Unlikely to ever happen, but my sincerest hope for people. AI needs to end. The data centers. The constant generating crappy “art” and such. The constant reach for some artificial power, ready to fix our lives.

It’s all so unnecessary, and unhelpful. Truly, the few good things I can see coming from these LLM’s are so far on the fringes, they’ll likely never come to anything. It’s fine to let it die.

Oh, and while I’m at it, go outside. Enjoy the nice weather. Touch grass. You deserve it.

    1. Exactly. Even in scientific settings, it’s important we never reach a point where technology is doing more than accelerating processes. We should never allow our scientists to reach a point where they cede their responsibility to understand processes to machines.
