To My Dear Friends, on the Advent of Their Wedding

I must, before all else, apologize to you, for the timing of this message, which should have been delivered to you on the momentous day. I am a selfish man, and in my selfishness I neglected you, and for that I am sorry.

But what a day for celebration! Seeing the two of you brought together into one family fills me with both joy and sorrow, for I know there are many days ahead, and they will be filled with both blessings and hardship.

To the first of you, the head of the household, I cannot admonish you more fiercely than the great servant of Christ, the Apostle Paul, who wrote:

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the Church and handed himself over for her,”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭5‬:‭25‬

Even a great man must at times be reminded of the sacrifice that comes with this kind of love. Do not forget the sacrifice of Jesus, his own suffering and death on the cross, when you sacrifice of yourself for your wife. There are many trials ahead, and you must bear the burden of leadership in these matters.

Do not be impatient. Make your plans, and act accordingly, without undue haste. You are capable, and strong, but rushing forward can cast down even the strongest of men.

Listen to your wife. She will speak her needs and desires to you, if your ears are open to hear them. Do not forget to lavish on her words of affection and appreciation, and be aware in all things of her intelligence and her wisdom. Make your plans, and hear her advice. Teach her where you can, but accept also the knowledge that she can impart on you. Iron sharpens Iron.

To you who are now the chief advisor, I can offer very little. You have chosen a good, strong man. But even the best and strongest of us have our flaws. Be patient with him. Seek out knowledge and wisdom, and advise him to the very best of your ability. Always shed him in the best light, even when things seem hard, or his choices are contrary to your opinion.

You are, the both of you, parts of a singular machine now. It is important that you work with one another towards the same goals. Be clear with each other about your plans, and unite under one vision. In doing this, and working hard, and laboring in your love for each other, there is much good to be done.
