The pen is mightier than the sword. But what if I could use my pen to rewrite history?
What if I could change the whole of reality, simply by publishing a new one?
In 1984, by George Orwell, he envisions a world where the government could do just this. Not a literal changing of history, mind you, but a changing of the perception of it.
With the wave of a hand, the government is capable of publishing a whole new history to explain away wars, executions, regime changes. Books would be changed, the old copies taken down and burned, and the new copies put on the shelves.
Facts, nudged into the realm of fiction. Until the real world becomes indistinguishable from fiction, even by the perception of the government itself.
I buy old books. I believe, and it is a deeply held belief, that one should have a personal library. A place safe from alteration.
The online era and the rise of A.I is quickly pushing us towards a world so digital, that anything can be modified by the man who holds the keys to the network.
In a reality where videos can be edited in an instant, articles can be falsified, and everything is susceptible to hacking, there’s very little you can truly rely on to be true.
Even this post could be edited after I post it, by some government officer of appropriate rank.
I may come back in a year to find the writing here different from its original purpose, wondering when I wrote something so much different from what I remember.
That is a dangerous world.
