The Regeneration

How do you feel about cold weather?

At the end of every summer, the cycle of life transitions from a time of growth to a time of rest.

As nature winds down, the sun begins to set sooner and sooner. Trees begin to lose their leaves, storing up sugars and starches. Insects tunnel into the soil, having laid eggs. Seeds are packed away for winter storage.

What happens next is a great sleep. All of nature begins to come to a creeping halt.

I love this time of year. When the cold truly sets in. When every step outside challenges you, you begin to appreciate the spring and summer days. It is the great reset that takes place before new, beautiful growth. The hardship that leads to strength.

You see, the cold is vital. Without it, the trees would gradually expend all of their energy maintaining foliage, with no time to rest. They would slowly die. Insects would churn out eggs, but without the temperature shifts, they would likely never hatch.

The cycles of our planet would be unrecoverable. Broken. The planet would desolate itself. The diversity of life which we so cherish and enjoy, would instead be replaced by tropics where they can exist, and barrens where they could not.

This is perfection. Beauty. A grand circle, spinning ever round and round, and round, unbreakable.

I love the cold.
