What are your favorite emojis?
In subversion of expectations, I’m actually going to talk about emoji today.
Yes, me, the serious, philosophical, pseudo intellectual, is going to discuss emoji.
Why? Well, it’s quite simple. I think they’re a symptom.
Well, a symptom of what? I hear you say it, and so I will answer. Emoji are a symptom of social disconnect. They are an attempt at unthreatening, stakes free expression of feelings, that emulate or exaggerate real emotions.
Indeed, I think this is quite unfortunate and dangerous. Not only have we dumbed down the written word, reducing it to drivel and self stimulation in the next generation, we’ve now replaced true emotional expression with.. silly cartoon faces.
In the frenzied, manic effort to produce more and more ways to communicate, we’ve reduced the quality of how we do it. No more face to face talks at a friend’s house. No, now we send short form messages with icons to express ourselves. What sadness this brings me.
And yet, I am perhaps a hypocrite in my own right. I have, after all, implemented these very same emoji myself. I must have fed the beast in doing so, encouraging the use of such a thing.
Dear reader, what have we done?
