A Place I Remember

What is your favorite restaurant?

I have this distinct memory in my mind, of a place I don’t think I’ve ever been. When you walk in, the savory scents of your favorite foods fill your nostrils. The lighting is soft, casting gentle shadows on the booth. You sit across from your loved ones, your friends.

And it’s quiet. You can hear the people you’re talking to, you can read, you can think, and you can enjoy your favorite meal. You can do all of this without the distraction of managers coming and nagging you about the service. The waiter or waitress is polite, cheerful, and clearly cares about their job. And the food is made by someone who loves the food. It’s not just a job to them, it’s JOY.

You can sit there for hours, undistracted. The conversation flows so easily, without the noise of regional music overhead and the noise of a large, over full building. All of the conversations around you, though audible, are unobtrusive, relaxed, and intimate.

It’s an experience I’ve only ever seen in movies and television. It’s arguably the best dining experience one could imagine. And in a world full of maximum overstimulation, it’s one that seems pretty difficult to find.
