Product Review: Uniball Zento Signature

The Uniball Zento Signature model is a very, very nice pen on initial examination. Its striking minimalist aesthetic is quite nice to look at, and it writes so smoothly and beautifully.

Unfortunately, it is massively overpriced for what it is, and its aesthetic features fall apart under closer inspection. What you get in the box is just the pen, with no refills, for the grand price of 48$ on Amazon at the time of writing. Compare this to the TUL pens metal bore pens, which cost around 25$ currently, and come with refills.

I will grant, TUL pens write SLIGHTLY less nicely than the Zento pens, but it’s a really close call.

Additionally, and this is me being pedantic, when you remove the magnetic lid from the pen, it leaves a metallic residue that ruins the clean white aesthetic. For the price of the pen, this is simply unacceptable, and while it may have been unnoticed on the black model, I have no expectation that it would go unnoticed on any of the lighter color models.

The buildup of grey film on the pen bore starts to degrade the aesthetic of the pen almost immediately.

Ultimately, if you’re looking for a good value, I’d look at some of the regular Uniball Zento pens, as you get the same writing quality, almost the same feel, and avoid the price pitfall.
