Finding Inspiration in Preparedness

I have found the world to be a confusing place. How is it that in a society where anyone can move upwards from poverty, how is it that so few can do so? The answer is simple: we stopped preparing for the future.

Note the specific wording in that phrase, because it’s important. People think about the future constantly, and that’s a big source of anxiety for most. But fewer and fewer people each year are actually preparing for the future. We are all perpetually moving towards the future at a set rate, but we simply allow things to come and go and happen to us.

Looking back at my history, it started at a young age. I moved towards adulthood, but never got a job and started saving for a car. I knew I would need to drive, but never pursued my drivers license. I was worried about accidents, but never pursued medical skills. I was worried about finances, but never invested.

The list goes on. There are millions of things that could go wrong, millions of categories of disaster, crisis, or emergency to explore. But ultimately, all of these things have simple solutions, and you can narrow them down into small group of categories.

This inspired me to start looking at preparedness in a different light. While most people view “prepping” as apocalypse survival, I see it as simply preventing small things turning into big things. I started to plan, and started to see small successes.

And with each small step towards preparedness, I was also seeing success in the rest of my life. When you have fewer debts, you have less financial stress. When you are working towards a goal, and succeed, you feel good. When you take care of your physical health, there are fewer health emergencies.

My recommendation is always this: start with small goals. Celebrate the achievement of those goals in a reasonable manner. And be inspired for the life you are creating. Don’t be passive. Don’t watch yourself move towards disaster and let it happen.

Peace through preparedness.
