About

My name is Dakota. Whew, it took years to get that out there. Welcome to Modern Survival Arkansas. I am, obviously, a resident of the Natural State, with an interest in preparedness. I grew up watching shows like “Doomsday Preppers” and “The Walking Dead” and very quickly found myself lacking in every way that one might need to survive. Oh, the mind of a child. Capable of imagining a future, yet with so little clarity.

Over time, I realized that the world that the so called “Doomsday Preppers” were living in, was a fantasy. That in the midst of their own misguided fear and anxiety, they were putting all their energy into things that would likely never happen, engaging in impractical behaviors.

As my childish world view collapsed, a new world view had to take its place. And in this world view, I saw an intersection where preparedness and survivalism met with science, philosophy, and theology. The melding of these things combined to create a worldview where I became more prepared and less fearful. Where I could use the knowledge I had learned to help others, not preserve myself. Where death, being the end of all men, was not an enemy to run from, but a great adventure waiting to be met.

Expertise

My expertise comes from nearly eight years working in an emergency department, seeing the worst things that can happen to people, and learning to prevent those things from happening to myself and others, as well as how to respond to the (sometimes very) bad things in life.

I’m not an authority on these things. Most of my experiences are based in watching the effects of bad things happening to other people, and the side effects of that happening. The words that I write should be measured for their wisdom and tested against logic and reason, and I should be challenged on things that you believe that I am wrong about. This is the path to knowledge.

What You Do

I work full time in a busy emergency department, doing my very best to help each and every patient I see. In my free time, I work out, I work on my house and garden, and I read and write.
