The Weapon of Focus

I am a man with many weapons. And amongst those many weapons, one important one is left untrained, neglected, and unused. It’s a powerful asset, allowing me to peel away at layers of information like the layers of an onion, and then utilize that information for maximum effect.

The weapon is focus.

And in an age where short form, addictive media is number one on the algorithm, our minds are struggling to adapt, at the cost of our attention. The seemingly endless rabbit hole of 15 second clips of information slowly drain our minds of their precious ability to be attentive. To think clearly, and formulate the words we are trying to say, the plans we need to lay out, and the tasks we must accomplish.

I remember a time, not too long ago, when I could read for hours, fully absorbed in a subject I was studying. Those days ended at the dawn of social media, and my life hasn’t been the same. I struggle to maintain my reading level, I struggle to be aware of my surroundings, I struggle to take in details.

Your focus is a weapon. It allows you to understand things at a more complex level, and to process details you would otherwise miss. I don’t know if I’ll ever recover my focus, but I’m trying. I hope I can. As time goes on, hopefully I will be able to share some of what I’ve learned.
