Squared Away Ep. 2: 5.11 Prime Carrier and Growing Mint.

Welcome to episode 2 of Squared Away! Today, I’m finally receiving my 5.11 Prime Plate carrier, planting mint, and sharpening chisels!

5.11 Prime Plate Carrier

One of the many things I’ve wanted over the past few years is a plate carrier kit. The 5.11 prime plate carrier is a sub 150$ low profile option, and is going to be my first. I ordered the version in Olive drab, and will be choosing how to modify it as I go. I’ve ordered some Hoplite Armor lvl 4 plates to go in it, but those have yet to ship, so I’m still a little stranded. I’ll be using this kit for workouts primarily, combat secondary, so I’m not super worried about getting the very best carrier at the moment. I’ll put in a full review when I’ve assembled the carrier and plates and tested the system.

Growing Mint Herb

So, I’m starting on my gardening experiment with mint plant. I want to start with something that pests are greatly opposed to, is easy to grow, and can be harvested for multiple purposes. I intend to dry some for use as a seasoning, press some for use as an oil and for making scented candles, and some other things as well. It’s going to give me a starter bit of training on plant management and growing, and push me farther into the gardening arena.

Sharpening Chisels

I recently acquired a set of hand chisels that I intend to use for wood work. But the previous owners hadn’t sharpened it adequately or at a good angle, so it was off to the grinder for me. I chose to go for an aggressive 20 degree angle, and I’m honing them down super sharp for an optimum cut for joints. My grinding wheel did a superb job and I’ll be finishing up with my Lansky sharpening kit down to a razor edge.

So that’s Episode 2 wrapped up! I’ll see what happens this week, and we’ll put out another update next Tuesday!
