Continuing the first 72 series, I’m going to talk about water preparation. Water preparation is CRUCIAL to your survival, and you’ll need to increase your water intake to prevent dehydration and the issues that come with it. Again, a lot of people over complicate it, or give you a really complicated solution. But water preps are super simple, so let’s just follow along.
Who Will Be Drinking?
We’re going to follow a very similar formula to the previous article on food preparation, using a two parent and three child family. To calculate their needs, track the total amount of liquids they take in in one day, then DOUBLE that amount. This is the amount you should store PER DAY. The reason I suggest doubling resources is that you may need an increased intake due to survival efforts. High stress levels and increased physical requirements can successfully dehydrate you very quickly, so having an excess can keep you breathing.
Storage Considerations
Water storage is a little more complex than food storage. To keep a healthy supply, you should invest in food grade water containers. These containers are UV resistant, won’t bleed chemicals into your water, and limit bacteria and algae growth. Fill the containers with clean water, and cycle it out every 6 months to 1 year. This will keep your water tasting it’s best, and help prevent contamination issues. Invest in some test kits for use in an emergency to protect you from drinking diseased or contaminated water.
Additional Water Solutions
It’s important to consider additional water solutions in case you should find your on tap supply contaminated. Investing in Sawyer water filters, Iodine tablets, and Berkey water filters are all excellent ways to supplement your needs, and can make up for lost water supplies. It’s never as convenient to filter water as it is to have it on hand, but you by having these additional preparations set aside, you can save yourself some trouble.
Water doesn’t expire, and if you understand the concepts and principles behind safe water storage and purification, you can save yourself a lot of trouble. Water supply issues are one of my number one expected killers, so I’ve invested time and research into helping people understand their needs for a fulfilling, safe water supply.
