It’s that time of year again, where temperatures are getting colder and the risk of ice and snow come out to play havoc with our lives. With this in mind, it’s time for me to be putting in the prep work on my Lexus to make sure I’m ready for a long night in the cold, or two! So here’s a list of things I’m going to be doing to get myself and my vehicle ready for a cold night:
The Travel Bag
The travel bag goes in my car at all times. It’s designed to make sure I’m ready to stay in one place longer than I expected, so it includes things like clothes, a blanket, and some basic hygiene items. Here’s a list of what I put in mine:
- A change of clothes.
- A small battery for my phone.
- A wool blanket.
- Gloves.
- Hand Warmers.
- Toothpaste and toothbrush.
The Get Home Kit
This kit is a massive supplement to the travel bag, and it’s designed for a more emergent scenario. Should you somehow wind up in a non permissive environment, with a non functioning vehicle, this is the bag you grab and go.
- Medical Kit (IFAK, BHRK, TRK).
- Tarp or tent for shelter. (Preferably in low profile colors)
- Wool Blanket or sleeping bag. ( I prefer the wool blanket, which I will wear in colder weather to lower my bag weight.)
- A sturdy, fixed blade knife.
- Multitool
- Folding saw.
- Map
- Compass
- Pen
- Expo Marker
- Spare handgun magazines. (loaded)
- Flat Solar Panel, External Battery, and phone charger.
- Paracord
- Water Purification system, including tablets, filters, and water containment for boiling.
- Firekit, with at least three different starting methods. (Waterproof.)
- Dehydrated Food
- Calorie Bars
- Chem Lights
- Dry clothing in a DRY BAG. (Do not get caught in the cold with no dry clothing to change into. This will lead to hypothermia and DEATH.)
- Mess Kit
For the Vehicle
For the my vehicle, a Lexus GS300, I’m going to be getting a few things.
- Recovery boards, if I can find a set to fit in my vehicle. I haven’t done a whole lot of research, but I will be doing what I can to put it together.
- A tire inflation kit.
- Road flares
- An SUV\Truck, Because let’s be honest, if I wasn’t poor, I wouldn’t be driving a Lexus in Arkansas Winter.
