The BHRK, or Basic Hemorrhage Response Kit, by Fieldcraft Survival, is a really fantastic piece of lightweight gear. Combined with knowledge, practice, and a tourniquet, you have everything you need to control bleeding until first responders arrive. But what is in it, and how do you use it? This is a beginners guide to the BHRK.
Step 1: Gloves, Gloves, Gloves.
These come standard in every quality stop the bleed kit, for one reason: blood borne pathogens. Getting blood anywhere is bad, and your hands are literally pathways for disease.
Step 2: QuickClot Hemostatic Dressing
QuickClot Hemostatic Dressing targets the root cause of the bleed. Pack it into the wound and let the Hemostatic agent kickstart the clotting process. Make sure to hold pressure on the wound for as long as possible.
Step 3: Apply the S-Rolled gauze
Put this in behind the Hemostatic gauze to increase pressure and soak up more blood. The underlying theme here is increased and continuous pressure on the sight of the bleed.
Step 4: 4 Inch Mini Trauma Dressing
After you’ve packed the wound, compress it with pressure using the mini trauma dressing. Make sure you get this on tight to compress the wound.
There’s also some surgical tape in the kit, which can serve multiple purposes depending on your situation. This kit covers all the basics, and is a good starting point for handling anything smaller than an arterial bleed. If you want to pick one up, check out the links section below.
